A Gratitude Post by: Amanda Vander Kelen

Today is a beautiful, sunny, warm day in autumn in Chicago. I took some time to reflect on where I am now and how I became the person I am today. Although my personhood is not complete (do we ever stop learning and growing?), I am a fully functioning adult human and I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the women in my life who have helped shape who I am.

First and foremost, to the women throughout my life who I consider mentors. These are educators, therapists, dancers, moms, aunts, archivists, librarians, and spiritual leaders. Through the process of putting my words online vis-a-vis this blog, I have had the wonderful experience of re-connecting with many of these extraordinary women. I am reminded of the times in my life each one of them has helped and influenced me to strive for my goals and attain the many accomplishments I have. Without each of these women, I could not be the women I am. I am reminded of the little girl I was, and how she is still exactly the same person - just taller (barely), vastly more educated, and extremely more self-aware. To each and every one of you, thank you. Thank you so much for being part of my life and continuing to show me what it is I truly want in this life.

Finally, to the women who have been a negative influence in my life. There are significantly less of these women, but still worth acknowledging. Without these women, I would see only the light, not the duality of darkness and light. I would be blind to the complexities of human nature, the impact life has on everyone, and the choices one makes out of what life brings. Without these women, I would also think that this has no bearing on me, but I am not perfect. Everyone has this duality, and some choose to cultivate the darkness. Thank you for showing me that while no one is perfect, walking in darkness or light is a choice. It is not predestined.

I have experienced light. I have experienced darkness. I still choose to walk in light. What I have learned is that it is a choice, and we all can do the right thing if we choose.

My hope is that I can be a positive force for the women to come. Know that I am here, I see you, and you are worthy. You are not a number. You are a whole person and the world needs good women to keep Her going.

Blessed Be.

Mindfully,
~Amanda
